Recep Tayyip Erdogan joins an Islamist party and becomes the mayor of Istanbul during a period when Turkey is ruled by the secular elite. However, because Turkey’s constitution forbids the mixing of religion and politics, Erdogan is imprisoned and barred from ever again becoming an MP.
