48 Hours Justine’s Voice Airs February 15 2025 on CBS
This Saturday, February 15, 2025, at 10:00 PM ET/PT, 48 Hours investigates the heartbreaking case of Justine Vanderschoot, a 17-year-old from Auburn, California, whose brutal murder in 2003 left her family devastated. 48 Hours contributor Natalie Morales reports on the ongoing battle her family faces to keep her killers behind bars after a change in state law created a loophole that could potentially free one of them.
Justine was tragically killed by her boyfriend, Danny Bezemer, and his roommate, Brandon Fernandez. The men buried her in a shallow grave while she was still alive, as revealed by her autopsy. Both men were sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after pleading guilty to the murder in 2005. However, in 2020, Fernandez petitioned to have his conviction overturned under a change in California’s murder law, seeking to be re-sentenced as an accessory after the fact. If his petition is granted, he could be released after serving a reduced sentence.
Justine’s parents, Don and Lynnette, along with her sister Christine, are determined to ensure Fernandez remains behind bars. “We’re fighting for her, that’s why we’re here. She doesn’t have a voice, so we’re her voice,” Christine says in the episode.
48 Hours follows the Vanderschoot family’s emotional journey as they fight for justice for Justine, honor her memory, and advocate for victims’ rights and education on teen dating violence.
