60 Minutes – August 22 2021 – ‘Race in the Ranks’, ‘Geldingadalir’, ‘Kindred In the Bleachers’ – CBS

Race in the Ranks – More than 70 years after the armed forces were integrated, African Americans are still more likely to be reprimanded and less likely to be promoted than Whites in the United States military. Even the most accomplished Black officers are subjected to racial bias on a regular basis, and substantial portions of the rank and file think the system is rigged against them. The military has already attempted to address inequity, but this time it is taking place under the watchful eye of Lloyd Austin, the country’s first African American secretary of defence. A former soldier who has firsthand knowledge of prejudice.

Geldingadalir – The heat from the incandescent pieces of molten rock flying out of Iceland’s newest volcano can be felt 200 yards away, with temperatures reaching over 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. Some of the planet’s deepest, most fundamental forces propel the red-hot rock 20 storeys into the air. The non-stop lava fireworks have garnered 90,000 tourists, including Thor Thordarson, one of Iceland’s leading volcanologists.

Kindred In the Bleachers – Dave Kindred’s life is written in the annals of sports journalism. Kindred covered Super Bowls, World Series, and 52 Masters for more than a half-century. As a cub writer in Louisville, KY, Kindred met the rising local fighter Muhammad Ali in 1966, kicking off the first of more than 300 interviews. Kindred watched Ali throughout his career, and in the next episode of 60 Minutes, he tells Jon Wertheim about the oddest interview he ever had with the heavyweight champion.
