How the Victorians Built Britain – 15 July 2021 – 15/7/2021 – Thursday – Channel 5

Building Victorian Britain

Michael Buerk investigates how the Victorians revolutionised law and order, established the first modern police force, and constructed the prisons that Britain still uses today. He starts on Spike Island, Co Cork, called “Ireland’s Alcatraz,” where he learns about the horrifying circumstances faced by convicts awaiting shipment to Australia, as well as the experiences of those who attempted to flee. Next, Michael visits Crumlin Road Gaol in Belfast, where he learns why the Victorians embarked on Britain’s largest prison-building programme – and why their efforts at prisoner rehabilitation didn’t always work. In Glasgow, he learns why the city became the country’s fist capital.
