Jay’s Yorkshire Workshop – 22 September 2021 – 22/9/2021 – BBC Two

Series 1 Episode 5 of 6 – Ex-RAF serviceman Tony comes to the workshop to tell Jay about fellow veteran Paul, who suffered problems such as homelessness when he left the forces. Paul went on to set up a charity in Hull to help other former service men and women with things like housing and food. The charity plans to build the world’s first veteran’s village, featuring 48 homes. Tony would like Jay and his team to come up with something for Paul’s office. Expert woodworker Saf designs a Union Jack desk that opens up to form a meeting table which his team, Kate and Jabbar, set to work on. The project is extra special for Kate as she comes from a military family.

Also visiting the workshop is Lesley. She comes to tell Jay about Edgar and Elizabeth, who fostered her when she was a teenager. Lesley says they helped turn her life around and that she and her family now feel like a part of theirs, something she wasn’t expecting as a young person growing up in the care system. Edgar and Elizabeth have gone on to foster 130 children. Elizabeth has always wanted a rocking horse, so Isabelle and her team create a contemporary take on the traditional toy, which they give to the surprised couple.

Finally, Ciaran and his team make a personalised snooker cue and case to thank Qasim, a young local who galvanised Bradford City Football Club and others to help get meals to people in the city who were left in financial difficulties during lockdown.

About Jay’s Yorkshire Workshop

Jay Blades opens the doors to his brand new workshop in Bradford.

In each episode, members of the public nominate local heroes from across Yorkshire to receive a bespoke, handmade piece of wooden furniture to recognise the work they do for their community, often going above and beyond. Jay hears first-hand what makes each local hero special and why they are deserving of this thank you.

Jay gives the task of making the items to one of his three experts in the workshop. Ciaran, Isabelle and Saf are three of the country’s best fine furniture makers, who create stunning designs each week.

Making the items with the experts are six passionate woodworkers from the surrounding area who have all come to the workshop to learn from the experts they’re teamed with and working alongside. Each has a personal reason to be here, and the series explores their lives whilst following how they go about making each item and learning on the job.

This show is broadcast on BBC Two, also known as the British Broadcasting Corporation.
