Saving Lives at Sea – 2 November 2021 – BBC Two

Series 6 Episode 10 of 10 – Last year, the lifeboats around the UK and Ireland came to the aid of over 8,300 people. But no matter what they face when they head out on a shout, all crew members are instilled with the same philosophy: they are not there to judge.

In Portrush, Northern Ireland, the crew race to the rescue of a boy who’s got into difficulties whilst jumping off rocks. As he is battered by huge waves, and with hypothermia a real concern, one of the crew volunteers to jump into the water to try and save him.

On the Pembrokeshire coast, the lifeguard team at Whitesands Beach join forces with the St David lifeboat crew to rescue someone who’s fallen from the rocks and been found unconscious in the water. At Saunton Sands, Somerset, the Appledore crew respond to a 999 call from a man whose wife is being blown out to sea on her new paddleboard. And in Eastbourne, the crew are alerted to reports of a small dinghy with 34 people on board that’s lost all power in the middle of the English Channel.

Every day around the UK and Ireland an unpaid army of men and women, from artists to undertakers, priests to poets, are ready to put their lives on the line to save those of strangers. From the Bristol Channel to the inland loughs of Ireland, on rocky Atlantic shores and remote Scottish islands Saving Lives At Sea tells the story of these ordinary people who are doing something extraordinary. This series gives an insight into the lives and the motivations of the volunteers of the RNLI who have signed up to a unique way of life and are ready to leave their jobs, their homes and their families to race to the rescue of others 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Last year, the lifeboat crews and lifeguards around the UK and Ireland raced to the aid of over 9,400 people, but all the volunteers know that, when the pager goes off, not every shout will end in a successful rescue.

In the Solent, one the busiest stretches of water in the UK, reports come in of a missing kite surfer, the crew of Lymington lifeboat station launch and start searching, but as the hours pass they begin to fear the worst. While 20 miles to the west, at the end of one of the hottest days of the summer, the Poole crew are called out to try and save a father and daughter from drowning as they’re swept out to sea. And at Chiswick, one of the few RNLI stations with a crew on permanent standby 24/7, an unusual casualty in the river Thames leave the crew attempting to save not just one but nine lives.
