South Africa With Gregg Wallace – 2 February 2021 – 2/2/2021 – Tuesday – ITV
Episode 5 – Soweto, Johannesburg
This time, Gregg makes his way to the city of Johannesburg on the eastern shoreline of South Africa.
His destination is a bustling urban metropolis – Soweto – that at the same size of Liverpool, is a city in itself. The area is known for its rich history, vibrant culture and dynamic attitude.
First stop for Gregg is an abandoned power station – Orlando Towers. The old cooling towers have been converted into an adrenaline seeker’s paradise. People climb up them, bungee off them and even freefall into them! At 100m high Gregg has a 360-degree view of Soweto and can see the effects of gold mining on the landscape. Not one for heights, Gregg decides to make it down to ground level the old fashioned way – in the lift.
Guide Charles Ncube shows Gregg the sites using a tuk tuk to wind through the warren of streets. First stop is breakfast, where Gregg is joined by Charles’s mates to share a meal of amagwinya – or fat cakes. A traditional township breakfast, fat cakes are little deep fried savoury doughnuts..
Fuelled and ready to explore more, Gregg and Charles head to Vilakazi Street – South Africa’s most famous street.
This is where both South Africa’s first black president Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu lived – just five minutes’ walk from each other. It was here that both fought against apartheid – South Africa’s policy of racial segregation.
Gregg heads out of the centre of Soweto into its suburbs and heads to Precious Moments Day Care where food is at the heart of the school’s success. Here he meets up with ‘Food Mama’ Flora who is cooking the kids’ lunches for the day.
For the last part of his journey, Gregg travels south to Kliptown to search out a troupe of gumboot dancers.
Gumboot dancing originated in the goldmines of Johannesburg and Soweto as a form of communication between miners in the dark and noisy conditions.
At the Kliptown Youth Programme, Gregg meets up with co-founder Thulani Madondo and head of dance Thando Bezana to learn a few of the steps
