The English "What You Want and What You Need" 10 November 2022: Episode 1 on BBC Two 11Released from long-term army service in 1890 Oklahoma, Pawnee scout Eli Whipp is intent on returning north to his ancestral homelands in Nebraska to stake a legal land claim. However, now returned to civilian life, he discovers he has no protection against brutal race prejudice except his own supreme physical abilities. Incarcerated in violent circumstances, Eli meets Lady Cornelia Locke, an Englishwoman who is also looking to travel north with the sole intent of taking revenge against the man she believes is responsible for the death of her child. However, having just arrived in the United States, she has immediately discovered the target of her revenge is equally intent on killing her before she can reach her destination. His begrudging but compliant employee Richard M Watts has been tracking her all the way from Liverpool and has been instructed to kill Cornelia at an abandoned hotel at journey’s end. Before doing so, he takes her bag of money and invites her to a grotesque dinner where he tells her he intends to rape her as a bonus for carrying out his duties.

Meanwhile Eli, his horse and sacred bird skull taken from him, is cuffed by Watts and forced back onto the wagon that Cornelia arrived on, so that the driver Cusk might claim a reward for giving him over as the murderer of an Englishwoman. Eli, now knowing Cornelia’s likely fate, decides to return to the hotel he left her in but not before he and Cusk encounter a group of armed robbers who shoot Cusk before Eli can finish killing them.

Eli kills Watts and, with Cornelia’s help, finishes off all but one of Watt’s accomplices who he allows to escape unharmed. Cornelia, on discovering that Eli also intends to travel north, pleads that she may be allowed to join him, telling him that their meeting and their miraculous survival at the hands of Watts means their combined paths are written in the stars. Initially resistant, Eli relents, and they set out north together, united as outliers but with a shared ability to outwit violent attack.
