A coastguard helicopter crew flies out to rescue a fisherman swept by a freak wave out to sea, gritter drivers operate to keep the roads of Scotland safe, and a mechanic races to get a stranded motorist home in order to take his diabetes medicine

When winter strikes unexpectedly, traffic comes to a grinding halt as roads are transformed from grippy, reliable surfaces to slippery and treacherous danger zones. Snow, ice and slush cause insurmountable havoc for road users every year, unless the driver has a four-by-four with snow chains on the tyres. Thankfully, snowplough and salt-spreader drivers, and patrols are prepared to work all day and all night to keep UK roadways clear from obstruction when winter sweeps the nation. Fearless in the face of a cold front, these men and women are there to assist when disaster strikes, no matter the weather forecast.
